Who is Coton de tulear?

Introducing the Breed

Did you know that Coton de Tulear is from Madagascar in East Africa? In the old day, pirates brought dogs to the island and a few hundred years later, we have this beautiful furry fluffy Coton de Tulear. The white furry coat is really fluffy with a cotton feel to it. It is important for the owners to do the daily grooming because Coton’s hair is very soft and easy to mat. Use a soft brush for daily grooming.

Have you heard of this breed?

Coton De Tulear. When I first heard the name, I am like what? Cotton the what kind of reaction. The breed name "Coton De Tulear" is French and translates the 'cotton' of Tulear. Tulear is a city in Madagascar, located in East Africa. In the US, this breed is still a rare breed. The breed first came into the US in 1974.

The name speaks for itself, and the breed is known for its coat. The coat feels very soft and fluffy, almost like cotton, and that's how the name came out.

When I first met this dog, I couldn't figure out what kind of breed this was. It has a look of Bichon and a little bit of Maltese in it. However, if you look at the dog carefully, this dog looks quite different from the breeds that I just mentioned.

Coat

The beautiful coat is where it attracts the most dog lovers. Silky, fluffy, soft, warm.. you name it. If you touch his coat, you will just fell in love with the feel of his coat. And, also, one f the best things about the coat is he rarely sheds. And I know there is no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog. But this nonshedding dog is almost hypoallergenic. So if you are an allergic person who loves dogs, you should definitely keep this on your list. But because Cotons don't shed that much, you still have to pay the price. In order to maintain that beautiful shiny coat, you will either have to brush it daily or do frequent groomings for the dog. I know there is no such thing as a free ride. Either you get a dog who sheds a lot, or you have a dog who doesn't shed but requires a lot of grooming. That's just life.

Colors and Appearance

Most Coton de Tulears you see online are white. However, they come in many different colors and combinations. There are six colors for this breed.

Temperament

You will experience a pure comedy with him. Fun, loving, playful, cheerful. Love to play. It is like a five-year-old kid who runs around all day. Trust me; you won't get bored with him. He is a comedian, and he will surely keep you busy. No wonder some people are calling this dog anti-depressant. He will just love you to death, and a sweet personality will make you fall in love very quickly. But, that could be a bit problem for this dog because he can be extremely attached. He may go through a lot of separation anxiety if you are not around. Since he always wants to be around you, he may not be very socialized, especially with other dogs. This is something you will want to address and work out when you decide to adopt him. Make sure to socialize your puppy. What a puppy learns between the age of 2-4 months will last throughout his life. So it is crucial for you to socialize your puppy during the period.

Special Notes

When you groom Coton or take him to a groomer, make sure not to trim or cut hair on the paw pad. I know many people when they groom their dog, they just trim the hair around the pad paws for a clean look. But paw pad hair is extremely important for this kind of dog. Hair around the paw pads will protect your dog feet from scratching and help with any type of pads -skin related problems such as eczema. If you have to cut the hair, just don't cut it too short. Leave just a little more so that it will cover some of the paw pads.
